Making of: 222

This was for the ImagineFX weekly challenge and the job was to design a robot which would replace infantry. I designed this android which was partly (subconsciously) inspired by Iron man designs. The actual sketch came around very quickly and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to modify it much anatomically (usually my sketches seem fine but when I scan them I have to draw them all over again because of all the errors :D ).
After scanning I painted on top of the sketch in grayscale and also did some linework. After that came all the coloring and textures. I didn't have time to paint a background in that short competition time, so I used a simple, boring gradient ramp. After the challenge I did the background in 3ds Max, placed the android painting on a plane as a texture and worked a long time trying to get the perspective right. After that I rendered the background and modified it heavily in Photoshop so that it didn't feel too out of place with the android. I am pleased with the outcome, even though I now see some design errors :).

old project: Arctic Mayhem

Arctic Mayhem from EImo on Vimeo.

This was a school project I did with my friend in 2009. My job was to conceptualize, model and texture everything. I think it took about 3-4 months work, we we're working in a game studio at the time and worked on the animation in our free time.
It was my first time modeling hipoly so I learned a lot of the progress. Also this was my first project where I learned to use specular maps (though you can't really see it because of the somewhat bland lighting).

Programs I used: 3ds Max 2009 & Photoshop

A newer rendering of the mecha can be found here:

First post

Hi!
My name is Juha Koppström and I'm a digital artist from Finland. Currently I'm studying 3d-animation and visualization at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. This is actually my third time starting this blog, but as they say, third time's a charm :).
I probably post here some abandoned projects and unfinished material, maybe some making of's too. Also I will happily read and answer any comments I receive :).
