Shadow Warden Art Dump 1

We recently finished our game project at school. It is a kinect-controlled action adventure set in a post-apocalyptic maya world. I worked as an art director/level designer.

More info about the game can be found from the development blog:

Here is some concept art I did for our game:

Concept art: troll project

Concept art for an animation project me and my friends were making one summer. We had the script and storyboard, but in the end decided that there was just too much work. Maybe we'll get back to it later...

I've got to get me one of these

Had the opportunity to try out Cintiq 24HD at work and I must say it's a pretty rad piece of equipment!

Also found this sculpt I had made in the summer:
Again Mudbox, about 1-2h.

Concept art: Resonance Velocity

Concept art for a game project pitch for school. It was supposed to be an on rails shmup. I had only 3 days to make these (and a few others) so they are quite rough. In the end our pitch wasn't chosen :(

Mars Effect

Mars Effect from Jassu Ilama on Vimeo.

An animation project we did in school. I think this was my first scripted animation with a real story
arc. I modelled all the human characters, animated some scenes and did smoke effects and compositing.
It was made and rendered in Blender. Compositing was done in Blender and After Effects.
The script, pacing and storytelling should have used more work in the beginning (it was pretty hard to make any changes to it in the middle of a production), but we learned a lot; next time the story will be better fleshed out in preproduction.

Also we came third in the Assembly short film compo which was pretty nice :).

Call of Cthulhu teaser

I did this animation for an english class about an year ago, our object was to create a lovecraft themed animation. I drew inspiration from the novel Call of Cthulhu and tried to create a dreamlike experience, where the viewer gets sucked into the world of the sleeping Cthulhu. Animation was created in 3ds max (cthulhu in zbrush) and took about 2 weeks to make (including render times), sounds are from freesound.org.

When I look at it now I think I should have spent more time lighting the scene (it's too dark!) and should have modeled more (and better looking!) plants to fill the seabed.

Shared Gems: Goblin Suckers

I recently participated in a 48hr gamejam. It was part of an event called Shared Gems which also had talks from the industry veterans. It was a great experience with great people and everybody had a lot of fun. We made a scrolling shooter, but instead of shooting you control a "vacuum cleaner" with kinect and collect stuff. My job was to make graphics and I did paintings that tell the story of the game and also victory and game over screens.

Old work: Airships

An aircraft i modelled that got cut out of the arctic mayhem animation. I used it as a base for a rendering experiment back in 2010. This was inspired by the cover of G-police.

Drawing from life

Here are a couple of charcoal drawings I made in a figure drawing course. A very instructive course indeed.

Old work: wolfman

A little side project I had while I was working in Mine Studios. I was going to make lowpoly fur for him, but got frustrated and abandoned the project. Sculpted in Mudbox and rendered in 3ds max.

Dungeon

Painted this for a painting class at school. I am not really experienced in painting with acrylics, but I had fun. I usually draw only characters so I wanted to push myself to paint an environment and use a different colour scheme than usually.

Schoolwork: Airship Study Room

This was done back in early 2011, we had to model and render a hotel room. I though a hotel room would be kinda boring so figured I make a sort of study room inside an airship. During this project I learned a lot about lighting in 3ds Max and also hipoly modeling and materials. In the end I didn't have time to make all the models/details I was going to make, so maybe I'll come back to it later...
(I think especially the ceiling area and the carpet needs more work, also thought about putting another airship in the background)
Once again everything done in Max and Photoshop.

Making of: 222

This was for the ImagineFX weekly challenge and the job was to design a robot which would replace infantry. I designed this android which was partly (subconsciously) inspired by Iron man designs. The actual sketch came around very quickly and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to modify it much anatomically (usually my sketches seem fine but when I scan them I have to draw them all over again because of all the errors :D ).
After scanning I painted on top of the sketch in grayscale and also did some linework. After that came all the coloring and textures. I didn't have time to paint a background in that short competition time, so I used a simple, boring gradient ramp. After the challenge I did the background in 3ds Max, placed the android painting on a plane as a texture and worked a long time trying to get the perspective right. After that I rendered the background and modified it heavily in Photoshop so that it didn't feel too out of place with the android. I am pleased with the outcome, even though I now see some design errors :).

old project: Arctic Mayhem

Arctic Mayhem from EImo on Vimeo.

This was a school project I did with my friend in 2009. My job was to conceptualize, model and texture everything. I think it took about 3-4 months work, we we're working in a game studio at the time and worked on the animation in our free time.
It was my first time modeling hipoly so I learned a lot of the progress. Also this was my first project where I learned to use specular maps (though you can't really see it because of the somewhat bland lighting).

Programs I used: 3ds Max 2009 & Photoshop

A newer rendering of the mecha can be found here:

First post

Hi!
My name is Juha Koppström and I'm a digital artist from Finland. Currently I'm studying 3d-animation and visualization at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. This is actually my third time starting this blog, but as they say, third time's a charm :).
I probably post here some abandoned projects and unfinished material, maybe some making of's too. Also I will happily read and answer any comments I receive :).
